چکیده

summary This study provides a model-based approach for implementing retail category management with a focus on markup decisions. We develop a reduced form Bayesian econometric model that captures price and sales variation for a retail chain. Based on this model, we derive the optimal retail markups on individual brands within a product category by maximizing the total category profit over a finite time horizon in a Bayesian framework. We demonstrate our approach using store-level weekly sales data from a retail chain. Our empirical findings indicate that, contrary to common practice in the retail industry, markups on high share brands could well be greater. We also find that category profit can be increased by driving down wholesale prices via competitive force, without an increase in overall category demand. We discuss the implications of our approach for retailers and other channel partners. .

Does Consumer Search Matter in Retail Trade?

This study investigates the relationship between consumer search costs, inflation, and firm markups in retail trade by employing actual measures of consumer search cost gathered by way of an online consumer survey. Consistent with theory, results indicate that markups can be higher if consumer search costs are higher. Results from panel data also show that increases in inflation lead to increas...

Competitive Pricing in a Supply Chain Using a Game Theoretic Approach

We develop a price competition model for a new supply chain that competes in a market comprised of some rival supply chains. The new supply chain has one risk-neutral manufacturer and one risk-averse retailer in which the manufacturer is a leader and retailer is a follower. The manufacturer pays a fraction of the risk cost (caused by demand uncertainty) to the retailer. We apply this competitiv...

Optimal taxation with monopolistic competition

This paper studies optimal taxation in a Dixit–Stiglitz model of monopolistic competition. In this setting, taxes may be used as an instrument to o¤set distortions caused by producer markups. Since markups tend to be higher in industries where …rms face less elastic demand, tax rates will be pushed lower in these industries. This tends to work against the familiar inverse elasticities intuition...

A bi-level programming approach to coordinating pricing and ordering decisions in a multi-channel supply chain

This paper investigates the Stackelberg equilibrium for pricing and ordering decisions in a multi-channel supply chain. We study a situation where a manufacturer is going to open a direct online channel in addition to n existing traditional retail channels. It is assumed that the manufacturer is the leader and the retailers are the followers. The situation has a hierarchical nature and...

The Bullwhip Effect on the VMI-Supply Chain Management viaSystem Dynamics Approach: The Supply Chain with Two Suppliers and One Retail Channel

This work investigates the effect of different inventory policies of a supply chain model using the system dynamics approach which belongs to the class of Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), automatic pipeline, inventory and order based production control systems (VMI-APIOBPCS). This work helps management to investigate the effect of different policies such as adding the VMI system or third party l...
